Viral Video: CBI takes over Manipur viral video case probe | India News – Times of India


NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday took over the investigation of alleged sexual assault on two women who were paraded naked by a mob in Manipur in early May. The CBI has now taken over the FIR registered by Manipur Police against unidentified people.

The Union home ministry handed over the case to the CBI after the video, purportedly shot on May 4, showing the two women being paraded naked, went viral earlier this month, resulting in a massive uproar across the country.
Seven accused persons including one juvenile have been arrested/ apprehended in connection with the viral video that surfaced on July 19 showing two women being paraded naked by a mob in the strife-torn northeast state.

In the ethnic clashes that erupted in Manipur on May 3 this year, hundreds of people have died while thousands have been forced to take refuge in the relief camps.

Meanwhile, a 21-member delegation from opposition alliance INDIA reached violence-hit Manipur on for a two-visit on Saturday. The delegation will reportedly take a first-hand account of the situation in the state. The visit comes amid repeated disruptions and adjournments over the issue of Manipur in both Houses of Parliament during the ongoing monsoon session with the opposition parties demanding for a detailed statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The opposition parties have also been demanding for imposition of the President’s Rule and also immediate removal of chief minister N Biren Singh in the state for failing miserably to control the situation.
The northeastern state has been riven with ethnic violence since May 3.
