A consortium of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and Russia’s TMH emerged the lowest bidder for making 120 Vande Bharat sleeper trains railways’ coach factory in Latur. The remaining 80 train sets will be manufactured by the second lowest bidder – a consortium of Titagarh Wagons and BHEL.

In this week’s episode of TOI Business Bytes, Alok Kumar Misra the Director of Kinet SPV and GM (Mechanical) at RVNL talks in detail about the Vande Bharat sleeper train project. Kinet SPV is a Special Purpose Vehicle formed between RVNL and TMH for the execution of this project.

The Rs 35,000 crore project entails manufacturing of 120 Vande Bharat sleeper variant train sets and their maintenance over a period of 35 years. The RVNL-TMH consortium quoted a price of Rs 120 crore per train set.

Indian Railways hopes to introduce sleeper Vande Bharat trains for faster and more comfortable overnight travel – a move that could possibly replace Rajdhani Express trains over the long-term on the railway network. Apart from the 200 sleeper Vande Bharat trains, railways is also in the process of finalising a project for making 100 aluminium Vande Bharat train sets, a first for railways.
