Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh Weather: Heavy rains causes Landslides, Floods in both states | Shimla News – Times of India
The heavy downpour in Himachal Pradesh over the last 24 hours triggered landslides, flash floods, and resulted in the closure of 752 roads across the state.
Similarly, torrential rains in Uttarakhand caused major rivers and their tributaries to flood, leading to landslides along the national highways to the Badrinath, Kedarnath, and Gangotri shrines, according to officials. Several people are feared to be buried in landslides triggered by heavy rains in the state.
Temple collapses in Shimla, 9 dead
At least nine people lost their lives as temple collapses in Summer Hill area of Shimla on Monday.
Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said nine bodies have been pulled out of the debris from a Shiv temple in the Summer Hill area that collapsed and the other site in the Fagli area where several houses were buried under mud and slush.
According to officials, many more people are feared trapped.
7 killed as cloudburst hits Solan
Seven people were killed after two houses were washed away in the flash flood caused by a cloudburst that occurred in Jadon village of Kandaghat sub-division of Solan district in Himachal Pradesh.
Two houses and a cowshed were washed away in the flash flood at around 1.30am. Two family members, Ritu Ram and Kamlesh, were rescued while seven people lost their lives.
5 dead in flash floods in Mandi
At least five people died and eight others were missing after flash flood triggered by cloudburst hit 7 Mile near Pandoh in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district as heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in the state.
752 roads blocked in Himachal Pradesh
According to the state emergency operation centre, 752 roads were closed in Himachal Pradesh because of the calamity.
All roads connecting Kullu and Mandi were closed on Monday, including the Chandigarh-Manali national highway, and other link roads including the Mandi-Kataula-Bajaura road.
The roads blocked in Shimla City included Shoghi-Mehli road, Fagli-Khalini road at lalpani bridge, Himland-Bambloe road near Edward school, Vikasnagar-Chotta Shimla road, Vikasnagar- Panthghati road at CID office and Tutikandi to ISBT road at bifurcation.
Schools and colleges in Himachal Pradesh closed
All schools and colleges in the state were closed on Monday following incessant rainfall.
Mandi and Shimla administrations declared a holiday on August 14 in all educational — government and private — institutions.
Heavy rain alert for Himachal Pradesh districts
Predicting further spells of rains, regional weather department in Himachal Pradesh has issued heavy rainfall alert for several districts, including Shimla, Kullu, Mandi among others for Monday.
“Moderate to heavy rainfall at most places, with very heavy rainfall at a few places, is very likely to continue over the state. Possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Kullu, Lahaul and Spiti, and Sirmaur,” the regional weather department said in an alert on Monday morning.
“Very heavy rainfall at many places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Beas, Ranjit sagar, pong dam and Sutlej catchment area,” it said.
Dehradun Defence College building collapses
Amid incessant rainfall in Uttarakhand, the building of Dehradun Defence College in Uttarakhand’s Maldevta collapsed on Monday.
The building collapsed in a few seconds like a house of cards.

Badrinath highway blocked
Badrinath National Highway in Pipalkoti area in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district has been blocked due to debris triggered by a landslide, following intermittent rainfall. Several vehicles have also been buried under the debris.
Char Dham Yatra suspended for 2 days
The Char Dham Yatra has been temporarily suspended on August 14 and 15 due to disruptions in traffic movement caused by landslides resulting from heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand.
Red alert in Uttarakhand districts, schools closed in Dehradun
A red alert for heavy rains has been sounded in six districts of Uttarakhand. The hill state has been reeling under incessant monsoon showers that have left 60 people dead and 17 missing while affecting normal life.
Intense to very heavy spells of rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places have been forecast for the two days in Tehri, Dehradun, Pauri, Champawat, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts where the red alert has been sounded, while Haridwar district is under orange alert, officials said.
Authorities in Dehradun and Champawat have ordered the closure of schools in the two districts on Monday.
