Hathras Stampede: A committee has been set up to investigate the incident

New Delhi:

More than 100 people, including women and children, were killed after a stampede broke out at a ‘satsang’ (prayer meeting) organised by a self-styled godman, Bhole Baba aka Narayan Saakar Hari, in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras on Tuesday.

He is believed to be at his ‘ashram’ in Mainpuri, about 100 km from the Phulrai village, where he held the event attended by thousands of devotees. Many senior police officials have reached the Hathras stampede site, while others are at his ashram, the Ram Kutir Charitable Trust.

A committee has been set up to investigate the incident.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed their condolences to the families of the victims.

Hathras Stampede: 6 Victims Yet To Be Identified

According to the Office of the Relief Commissioner, six victims are yet to be identified. Barring seven children and a man, all the casualties were women.

“Due to the uncontrollable crowd leaving the venue, devotees sitting on the ground were crushed. On the other side of the road, the crowd running in the water and mud-filled fields was forcibly stopped by the organizing committee with sticks, due to which the pressure of the crowd kept increasing and women, children, and men kept getting crushed,” the FIR against the ‘satsang organisers’ in Hathras said.

“The police and administrative officials present on the spot made every possible effort and sent the injured people to the hospital with the available resources. But no cooperation was given by the organizers,” it added.

Hathras Stampede: Case Against ‘Satsang’ Organisers

A case has been filed against the ‘satsang organisers’ in Hathras, officials said.

According to the FIR, permission was granted for 80,000 people but more than 2.5 lakh devotees attended the event.

They have been charged under sections 105, 110, 126 (2), 223, and 238 of the new criminal code Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the incident.

The panel will be headed by the Additional Director General of Police, Agra, and the Aligarh Commissioner, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said.

Hathras Stampede Updates: Forensic Unit, Dog Squad At Accident Site

In Hathras, a forensic unit and a dog squad have reached the stampede site. Teams of the Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are also present.

Baba Narayan Hari is likely to be arrested soon after at least 116 people died in a stampede at his ‘satsang’ (religious congregation) in Hathras on Tuesday.

The self-styled godman, whose original name is Suraj Pal and is also known as Saakar Vishwa Hari Bhole Baba, is believed to be at his ‘ashram’ in Mainpuri, about 100 km from near the Phulrai village, where he held the event attended by thousands of devotees.

Many senior police officials are at the Hathras stampede site, while others are at his ashram, the Ram Kutir Charitable Trust. 

Besides police personnel, an NDTV team at the ashram also saw his devotees gathering in large numbers.

After the Uttar Pradesh police carried out a search operation at Ram Kutir Charitable Trust in Mainpuri district in search of ‘Bhole Baba’, who hold a Satsang in Hathras where a stampede took place claiming the lives of 116 people, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar revealed that Baba ji was not found inside the campus.

“We did not find Baba ji inside the campus…He is not here…” said Deputy SP Sunil Kumar.

Aligarh DM Vishak G Iyer said that as many as 23 bodies have been brought to Aligarh and a total of three injured people are receiving treatment and out of them one is in critical condition.

“The death of a large number of devotees including women and children in the accident in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh is extremely sad. May God give a place to the departed souls in his lotus feet and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this shock. I wish for the speedy recovery of those injured in the accident,” Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said.

Around 70 cops were deployed to manage a crowd of thousands. The UP government has directed action against the organisers.

“Very sad news has been received about a stampede during a satsang organised in village Rati Bhanpur of Sikandra Rao area in Hathras,” Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said.

“The Uttar Pradesh government has directed the district administrative officials to carry out rescue and relief operations and provide proper treatment in hospitals in Hathras and nearby districts. Medical and paramedical staff of the health department along with ambulances and other necessary resources have been deployed on a war footing,” Mr Pathak said.

“Government-level officials of the health department from Lucknow have been instructed to remain in constant touch with the field staff,” he said.

President Droupadi Murmu Expressed Condolences To Families Of Those Who Were Killed

Hathras District Magistrate Ashish Kumar said that, according to numbers received from the community health centre, 50-60 people had died from the district. Officials in Etah district confirmed the deaths of an additional 27.

“We have received 27 bodies, of which 25 are female and two are male. Some injured have also been taken to hospitals. We have heard that there was a stampede during a ‘satsang’,” said Chief Medical Officer, Etah, Dr Umesh Kumar Tripathi.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken note of the incident and, on his directions, a committee has been set up to investigate the incident. President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her condolences to the families of those who were killed.
