NEW DELHI: NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday took a swipe at the BJP for destabilising duly elected governments in the states. “You talk of providing stable government but break duly elected governments in states,” Pawar said at a rally in Maharashtra’s Beed.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi government of the NCP, Congress and the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra lost power after Uddhav Thackeray’s party was split by Eknath Shinde with the “help” of the BJP.

According to media reports, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo had a “secret meeting” with his nephew Ajit Pawar, who is the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, in a developer’s house at Pune on August 12. Responding to the development, the Congress on Wednesday said the party’s leadership

Shinde joined hands with the BJP to become the chief minister with former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis his deputy.Sharad Pawar, who was the architect of the MVA government, suffered another blow when his nephew Ajit Pawar rebelled and split the NCP. Ajit Pawar also joined the Shinde government as deputy chief minister.
Since then, the senior Pawar has been holding rallies to target the NCP rebels. His rally today is in Beed, the constituency of key rebel NCP Leader Dhananjay Munde. Earlier this month, Pawar held a rally in Nashik the constituency of Chaggan Bhujbal another NCP rebel. The former Union minister is also expected to stage rallys in other constituencies of rebel NCP leaders.

The Congress has also lost several of its governments to defections by rebels, who have eventually joined hands with the BJP. In Madhya Pradesh, Congress government led by Kamal Nath was toppled after Jyotiraditya Scindia rebelled against the party. The Congress rebels then joined the BJP and ensured the return of Shivraj Singh Chouhan as chief minister. Jyotiraditya Scindia went on to become the civil aviation minister in the Modi government.

In Karnataka also, where the Congress won a landslide victory this year, the previous BJP government was formed after several MLAs of the grand old party defected to the saffron fold. Most of the Congress defectors eventually won their seats on BJP ticket in the bypolls. However, the BJP could not retain power in the state and lost to the Congress in the assembly elections earlier this year.
‘Pawar targets PM Modi
Sharad Pawar also continued with his attacks on PM Modi over Manipur violence. “PM Modi should have gone to Manipur and understood the pain of people there,” Pawar said.
Taking a swipe at PM Modi’s Independence Day speech, Pawar said “On 15th August, PM Modi said ‘Mi Punha Yein’ (I’ll come back again) I want to tell him a similar thing was said by Maharashtra’s former CM Devendra Fadnavis & he came to power but at a lower post. One wonders what will he (Modi) return as.” PM Modi, in his Independence Day speech, had asserted that he will come back to the Red Fort to address the nation again on August 15 next year.
Sharad Pawar also alleged that the policy of current rulers is to widen the wedge in society using caste, religion and language as tools.
