RB Leipzig beat Bayern Munich to win Supercup and spoil Harry Kane’s debut

Dani Olmo shone with a hat-trick, helping RB Leipzig register a stunning 3-0 win in the German Super Cup final clash against reigning champions Bayern Munich. This victory marked a notable start to the season for Leipzig and put a damper on the much-anticipated debut of Bayern’s record-breaking signing, Harry Kane.

England’s captain Kane signed a four-year contract with Bayern mere hours prior to kick-off. Despite his introduction into the game during the second half, his efforts weren’t enough to avert a defeat in the season opener against the holders of the German Cup. Coach Thomas Tuchel’s frustration was palpable, likening his team’s lackluster performance to an absence of progress during their extensive four-week pre-season preparation.

“It is a big problem because it feels as if we had done nothing in the past four weeks,” Tuchel said. “I cannot explain it. It was just not enough in every department. I have just no idea why. There is no relation between our form and attitude going into the game and our performance on the pitch.

“It is not good. It is the worse thing because there is such a big discrepancy,” Tuchel said.

Leipzig’s Mohamed Simakan narrowly avoided gifting Bayern an equalizer earlier in the match, his attempt to clear the ball striking the post. As Bayern’s front line faltered, a recurring issue from the previous season, Tuchel introduced Kane into the game in the 64th minute, eliciting enthusiastic cheers from the Bayern faithful. Regrettably, Kane was hardly able to make an impact, managing only three touches on the ball.

In a turn of events, Olmo secured his team’s victory by converting a penalty a mere four minutes later, adding to his already impressive goal tally. This momentous win earned Leipzig the coveted title of the season’s opening tournament.
