Pakistan: ‘PM Modi following Pakistan model’: Congress leader Rashid Alvi on BJP’s attacks against opposition | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was following the “Pakistan model” and “harassing the opposition using government agencies” to finish off all detractors.

“Throughout the history of Pakistan, the regime in power has attacked the opposition and put its leaders in jail,” Alvi said, adding: “Pakistan is not following India’s model, instead PM Modi is following Pakistan’s model.

The PM is harassing the opposition using the agencies. He wants to finish the opposition.”
Alvi was reacting to a tweet by Congress leader Karti P Chidambaram who equated the arrest of former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan with that of the conviction of Rahul Gandhi in a defamation suit.
“Pakistan following the India model in preventing the principal opposition leader from contesting elections,” tweeted Chidambaram.

After Saturday’s conviction and arrest, Imran technically stands disqualified from holding any public office for five years under Article 63(1)(h) of the Pakistan Constitution. The latest arrest comes in the lead up to an election expected to take place in the next three months.
Legal experts said the guilty verdict reached by an Islamabad district court could eliminate prime minister Shehbaz Sharif‘s greatest rival in a national election expected to be held in November. Khan, however, has the right to appeal the verdict.
Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on March 24 following his conviction in a Modi surname defamation case. A Surat court on March 23 had sentenced Rahul Gandhi for two years in jail in the 2019 case.
The Supreme Court has, however, stayed the conviction order, potentially paving the way for Rahul’s reinstatement as a Member of Parliament.
