Marlon Samuels, former West Indies star, found guilty of 4 charges under anti-corruption code by ICC


Marlon Samuels, a former cricketer from the West Indies, has been convicted of four violations under the Anti-Corruption Code of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) after an independent Anti-Corruption Tribunal conducted a hearing.

In September 2021, the International Cricket Council (ICC), acting as the Designated Anti-Corruption Official under the ECB Code, charged Samuels. Following his decision to exercise his right to a tribunal hearing, he was found guilty.

The Tribunal is now in the process of reviewing each party’s submissions to determine the appropriate penalty. The final decision will be announced in due course.

Samuels has been found guilty of:

Article 2.4.2 (by a majority decision) – Failing to disclose to the Designated Anti-Corruption Official, the receipt of any gift, payment, hospitality or other benefit that was made or given in circumstances that could bring the Participant or the sport of cricket into disrepute.

Article 2.4.3 (unanimous decision)- Failing to disclose to the Designated Anti-Corruption Official receipt of hospitality with a value of US $750 or more.

Article 2.4.6 (unanimous decision) – Failing to cooperate with the Designated Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation.

Article 2.4.7 (unanimous decision) – Obstructing or delaying the Designated Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation by concealing information that may have been relevant to the investigation.

Samuels played 71 Tests, 207 ODIs and 67 T20Is for the West Indies. He scored 11,134 runs and picked up 152 wickets during his international career between 2000 and 2018. Samuels was banned for two years back in 2008 as well. Samuels was found guilty of leaking match information to a bookmaker back in a West Indies bilateral series in February 2007. At the time, Biritish newspaper the Guardian had reported that the matter was picked up by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, the world governing body asked the West Indies Cricket Board to conduct an investigation under the terms of their code of conduct
