Manipur CM thanks Army as 212 Indians, who fled to Myanmar after May 3 violence, return home | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: More than 200 Indian citizens who had fled across the Myanmar border from Manipur after the ethnic violence in the north eastern state since May 3 have returned safely.
Manipur chief minister Biren Singh thanked the Indian Army for bringing back the people safely.
“Relief and gratitude as 212 fellow Indian citizens (all Meiteis) who sought safety across the Myanmar border post the May 3 unrest in Moreh town of Manipur, are now safely back on Indian soil,” chief minister Biren Singh said on X.
“A big shout-out to the Indian Army for their dedication in bringing them home. Sincere gratitude to GOC Eastern Command, Lt Gen. RP Kalita, GOC 3 Corp, Lt Gen. HS Sahi and CO of 5 AR, Col. Rahul Jain for their unwavering service,” he added.
Earlier today, while speaking on the occasion of Sadbhavana Diwas, Biren Singh said restoration of peace and normalcy is of paramount importance in the ethnic-strife torn state.
“There will be difference of opinions but people should keep aside their self interests and focus more on common interests. “The main objective now is the restoration of peace,” he said.
“People should work doubly hard so that the pace of development returns and the state once again moves towards unity and progress that it has been advancing to during the last six years”, Biren Singh said.
More than 160 people have been killed, and several hundred injured since ethnic violence first broke out in the state on May 3 when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill districts.
Meanwhile, the CBI has deputed 53 officers, including 29 women officers, from different ranks to probe Manipur violence cases.
The agency has already registered eight cases, including the two related to the stripping and parading of women by a mob on May 4, an incident that sparked massive furore after its video appeared on social media on July 16.
