Manipur: Another Manipur woman reports gang rape on May 3 | India News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: A 37-year-old mother holding her two minor sons and fleeing a mob that had burned down their house in Manipur on May 3 was waylaid by a group of men, pinned down and allegedly gang-raped, she said in a Zero FIR registered on August 9, over three months after the crime.

The survivor, who said she didn’t report the assault until now for fear of social ostracism and to spare her family unwanted attention, decided to approach Bishnupur’s women police station when she could no longer bear the “trauma and suffering I went through for no fault of mine”.
“Adequate punishment should be given to the gang of those culprits for sexually assaulting, abusing & physically assaulting me in the most horrific manner,” the FIR said. The case has since been transferred to Churachandpur women police station for jurisdictional reasons.

The woman chose to withhold her identity along with that of her husband. The FIR mentions a name with the words “name changed” at the bottom. The case, which has since been transferred to Churachandpur women police station for jurisdictional reasons, adds to the mountain of FIRs pertaining to killings, arson, clashes and mob crimes since Manipur erupted in violence on May 3.
The Supreme Court has referred to the CBI 11 cases of “heinous” crimes against women. Police have slapped charges of “gang-rape, assault or criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, and criminal conspiracy with common intention” against unidentified men. On May 3, around 6.30pm, the survivor recalls running from rioters who were torching houses in her locality, including hers.
Carrying her niece on her back and holding her two sons by the hand, she tried to scamper to safety along with her sister-in-law, who had another infant on her back. “I stumbled and fell on the road after running about half a kilometre from my place. Seeing me unable to get up, my sister-in-law came back running towards me. She picked up my niece from my back and, at my insistence, took my two sons along,” she says in the FIR. By the time she managed to get back on her feet, five to six men got hold of her and allegedly started abusing and assaulting her.
“Despite my resistance, the men started sexually assaulting me in a violent manner,” she recounts in the complaint. “There was no help from anybody despite my cries… And then some more miscreants joined the group. I lost consciousness. When I came around later, I found myself in a house surrounded by some people.” According to the FIR, the survivor’s health deteriorated after the alleged sexual assault, prompting her to visit the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal. But she returned without seeing a doctor as she was admittedly “very depressed” and “unable to express herself”.
The FIR says that the complainant also wanted to end her life. She went to the Manipur Institute of Medical Sciences in Bishnupur on August 8 after her discomfort increased, police said.
