Jammu Kashmir Election Results 2024 LIVE Updates: Congress-National Conference Alliance Secures Majority With 49 Seats


J&K Election Results 2024: 873 candidates are competing for a seat in the 90-member house.

New Delhi:

The Congress-National Conference alliance has crossed the halfway mark and secured 49 seats out of 90, winning the Assembly elections and is set to form the government. Of these, 42 seats belong to the National Conference, 6 to the Indian National Congress and one to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) – CPI (M).

“Omar Abdullah Banega J&K Chief Minister,” National Conference’s Farooq Abdullah announced after a strong showing in Jammu and Kashmir polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was proud of the BJP’s performance in the Union Territory, adding, “I thank all those who have voted for our Party and placed their trust in us.”

The assembly elections for its 90 constituencies were held in three phases – September 18, September 25, and October 1 – after a gap of 10 years. This is also the first time Jammu and Kashmir had assembly elections since Article 370 was abolished in August 2019, which divided the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

The three-phase elections resulted in voter participation of 63.88%, as per the Election Commission of India.

The counting of votes began today at 8 am, with heavy security arrangements in place.

Mr Abdullah – who will become Chief Minister for a second time, having already received the support of his father and party patriarch Farooq Abdullah – also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfil his promise and restore statehood stripped five years ago after the scrapping of Article 370.

Restoration of statehood was a key poll plank for the NC-Congress alliance.

 It was a bittersweet day for the Aam Aadmi Party. As the Election Commission figures indicated that it may not win even a single seat in Haryana, the party found its silver lining in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Aam Aadmi Party or AAP registered its first victory in assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir where its candidate Mehraj Malik defeated his nearest rival from the BJP in the Doda constituency by a margin of 4,538 votes.

To congratulate Mr Malik, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal video called him. “The workers are very happy that now we have an AAP MLA in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

BJP won 29 seats in Jammu and Kashmir in the first Assembly elections held after 10 years and the first after the removal of Article 370. Despite losing, the BJP delivered its best-ver performance in Jammu and Kashmir. Party chief JP Nadda said, “We accept the mandate received in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. Violent incidents have been curbed in Jammu and Kashmir since the abolition of Article 370. There was a time when the voting percentage was very low, but the huge number of voters in this election reflects the unprecedented enthusiasm of the people in the festival of democracy.”

“The Bharatiya Janata Party is committed to the all-round development and public welfare of Jammu and Kashmir. We will continue to raise every issue of development and public interest of the state,” Mr Nadda said.

BJP’s Vikram Randhawa won by 11,251 votes from the Bahu constituency in Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections 2024. He was standing against Congress’s Taranjit Singh Tony. He dedicated his victory to party workers who worked hard in getting votes. “I will ensure all-round development of Bahu assembly constituency,” he said, speaking to the media.,

The Jammu and National Conference has won 39 out of 90 seats in the elections and is leading on three seats. Meanwhile, their alliance partner, Congress, has won six seats. The majority mark in the 90-seat Jammu and Kashmir Assembly is 46. The BJP has emerged as the second largest party in the Union Territory, wining 27 seats and leading on two seats.

Elections are being held in Jammu and Kashmir after 10 years and the first time since the removal of Article 370 in 2019.
