Jagdeep Dhankhar-Derek O’Brien war of words brings Rajya Sabha to abrupt halt | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha was abruptly adjourned for the day on Friday by chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar after a war of words with TMC leader Derek O’Brien who was pressing for a discussion on the Manipur situation.

Dhankhar was interrupted by the TMC member who thumped the desk to make a point over non-admission of notices given by opposition members under Rule 267, prompting him to adjourn the proceedings calling O’Brien’s behaviour “theatrics” that would not be tolerated.
“We can’t suffer this,” Dhankhar said as he adjourned the proceedings for the day in less than half an hour during which birthday greetings were extended to two members, farewell accorded to retiring Vinay Dinur Tendulkar (BJP), official papers laid on the table and business listed for next week.

An all-party meeting convened by Dhankhar later failed to break the deadlock, sources said.
A total of 47 MPs from the opposition had given notices on Friday under Rule 267 that calls for suspension of the listed business and taking up the issue being raised.
Earlier, Dhankar said he had already agreed to a short duration discussion on Manipur and asked members to rise above partisan interests.
Addressing the TMC MP, Dhankhar said, “…it has become your habit to engage in theatrics. Every time you rise, you think it is your prerogative. The minimum thing which you can exemplify is to show respect to the chair.”
O’Brien objected to his actions being termed theatrics and said he was only pressing for a discussion under the rule that opposition parties want.
