It is Jos Buttler’s job to make Ben Stokes available for ODI World Cup: Ravichandran Ashwin

Star Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin reckons that England white-ball skipper Jos Buttler is a man of his word and will try his best to convince Ben Stokes to participate in the ODI World Cup.

Reports from the British media suggest that Stokes may reverse his decision to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) in order to participate in the upcoming World Cup in India. This news comes on the heels of the remark made by England’s white-ball coach, Matthew Mott, who indicated that limited-overs captain Jos Buttler would be instrumental in persuading Stokes to reconsider his retirement.

In an interview with the Mail on Sunday newspaper, Mott stated, “Jos will probably lead the way on that communication, but Ben’s pretty straight with all of us. We will see if he’s keen.” Mott also expressed optimism about Stokes’ potential return, despite the fact that the all-rounder’s plans remain uncertain. He emphasized the value of Stokes’ batting and fielding skills, stating, “There has not been a clear direction on what he’s going to do yet, but we are still hopeful. I’ve always said his bowling would be a bonus, but just look at what he brings with the bat, even in the field.”

“As Vadivelu says to a guy in the movie Friends, “Dude, watch that guy for some time. It seems Jos Buttler’s duty is to watch Ben Stokes, according to Matthew Mott. So, Jos Buttler is keeping an eye on Ben Stokes. It’s Jos Buttler’s responsibility now to bring Ben Stokes out of retirement and make him available for the 50-over World Cup,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Stokes will reportedly miss the IPL 2024 if he comes out of retirement to play ODI World Cup in India. The reason for Stokes missing the IPL is the five-Test series against India that will start on January 25 and end on March 11.
