IRE vs IND: I was preparing for ODI World Cup during my rehab, says Jasprit Bumrah

After an 11-month hiatus due to a lower-back stress fracture, India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is prepared for a triumphant return to the game. Bumrah will be stepping out on the field for the T20I series against Ireland, marking his long-awaited comeback since September 2022.

Implementing practice routines in preparation for the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup – events requiring intense 50-over spells – Bumrah is more eager and determined than ever. During his rehabilitation period, Bumrah practiced extensively as his focus remained on longer, one-day competitions rather than short-term T20 matches.

“We were mindful of the fact there is no Test cricket till the ODI World Cup. In my rehab as well, I was not preparing for a T20 game. I was always preparing for the World Cup competition,” Bumrah said in the press conference on the eve of the first T20I against Ireland.

“I have been bowling 10, 12 and even 15 overs. So I have bowled more overs, that way it becomes easier when less bowling is required. We kept that in mind that we are preparing for one-day competition and not a four-over competition. I have lots of overs under my belt. You have to keep working your way up. From where you left, you are are little down and you keep working your way up.”

The star bowler, who will captain India’s T20I team against Ireland, noted he has “lots of overs under [his] belt,” and is prepared to continue the uphill progression from where he left off nearly a year ago. Away from the game for the longest period in his career, the 29-year-old insists he is not overwhelmed by expectations, but is excited to embrace the sport he loves.

“I don’t really think about expectations. I just want to go enjoy the game as I have come after a long break. Never been away from the game this long. I am coming back to enjoy as I love this game,” he said.

Bumrah also mentioned his preparation method did not change; he practiced at the National Cricket Academy diligently. “I am just the same guy (that I was 11 months ago). I always had a lot of belief. I understand I am coming back after a long lay off. I am very happy to be back. Been working really hard at the NCA. It has been a long road. The body feels good and looking forward to some game time,” he said.
