If left untamed, Manipur trouble may pose threat to national security: Opposition | India News – Times of India
“Justice should be the cornerstone” of the effort to get the state back on the rails after almost three months of violence, the members from 16 non-NDA parties said before wrapping up their two-day trip.
They blamed N Biren Singh‘s BJP-led government of for violence flaring up every few days, and the continued internet blockade for a cycle of misinformation fuelling mistrust between communities. “You are requested to apprise the Union government of the complete breakdown of law and order in Manipur for the last 89 days,” the memorandum says.
“The failure of both the Central and state government to protect the lives and properties of the people of the two communities is apparent from the figures citing more than 140 deaths, burning of more than 5,000 houses, and internal displacement of 60,000 people.”
The delegation, which visited relief camps in Churachandpur, Moirang and Imphal, said they found the condition in which displaced people have been living “pathetic”.
Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the Modi government needed to “recognise that a no-confidence motion has been brought against it” over Manipur. “A discussion should be held in Parliament at the earliest to find a solution to the Manipur crisis…”
DMK MP M K Kanimozhi, who was part of the opposition delegation along with VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan, said people were so scared they were unwilling to leave the camps. “Kukis, Meiteis and Nagas alike have lost confidence in the BJP government,” she said. Kanimozhi said she met two women who had been sexually assaulted, “but determined to fight for justice”.
