Gujarat Building Collapse: One dead, 17 injured as portion of building collapses in Bhavnagar | Ahmedabad News – Times of India
According to the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation (RMC), the building, Madhav Hill, located on Waghawadi road, was built in 1996 and the Building Use (BU) permission was issued in 1997.
The ground-plus-two floors were commercial and had various shops while five floors above these shops were residential.
The building had shops in the basement area also.
Talking to TOI, municipal commissioner of Bhavnagar N V Upadhyay said, “The slab of the balcony of the commercial building collapsed. A woman working on the ground floor died while we have rescued around 25 people, all have received minor injuries.”
The deceased woman is identified as Hansben Jamod (47), who was working as a labourer.
The injured were shifted to Sir T hospital where six people are said to have received grievous injuries.
The BMC is working to clear the debris and it may take four to five hours.
The people from 56 residential flats were asked to vacate for safety reasons.
“The building was not in dilapidated condition and there was no notice issued by the municipal corporation. It’s our primary observation that cantilever design was faulty. If any slab collapses we can see iron road in debris but in the debris of this building these rods are missing,” Upadhyay added.
The shop owners complained about the leakage of water from the residential flats to their shops which made the building structure vulnerable.
The filthy water and drinking water lines were leaking and one of the flat owners was also doing the repairing work when the slab collapsed.
Somil who was running a computer shop in this building said, “There are around 200 shops in this building. The filthy water has been leaking for years from the portion which collapsed. We had asked residents several times to repair their water lines.”
