LUCKNOW: BJP picked turncoat Dara Singh Chauhan on Monday as its OBC face to take on SP’s Sudhakar Singh, a Thakur, in the September 5 byelection to the Ghosi assembly seat in UP, barely a month after the former quit Akhilesh Yadav’s party and resigned as an MLA to return to the saffron fold. BSP and Congress are likely to stay away from the bypoll, turning the contest into a bipolar one between BJP and SP.

Dara Singh pick BJP’s message to OBCs in UP
If noother major party joins the fray, the battle for Ghosi could mirror byelections to the Rampur Lok Sabha and Rampur Sadar assembly seats last year, both erstwhile SP pocket boroughs that BJP wrested. Sour ces said BJP deciding to field Dara Singh Chauhan, who is from the Nonia community, was a message to the OBC community, which determines electoral fortunes in the east UP region.“ BJP’s clout among the OBCs has been growing by the day. This will once again be proved in the Ghosi byelection,” said BJP spokesperson Hero Bajpai.
