Gehlot power sop puts Rs 2,500cr burden on Rajasthan | India News – Times of India

JAIPUR: Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot announced Thursday the abolition of fuel surcharge for all domestic and agricultural electricity consumers, irrespective of the units consumed. “This will put an extra burden of Rs 2,500 crore, which will be borne by the state government,” Gehlot said about the waiver, among the slew of recent sops he has declared ahead of assembly polls due later this year.

The state’s Congress government will give Rs 2,500 crore to the power distribution companies, Discoms in short. The state is currently giving 100 units of free power to all and no surcharge is levied up to 200 units.
Opposition BJP has alleged that the discoms are charging higher fuel surcharges to compensate for the revenue losses after the move to make 100 units free.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of a function on the 6% hike in OBC reservations, he said the quota was limited to 21% in the state as there was a 50 % cap set by Supreme Court. Now, he said, the SC has decided on the 10% reservation for EWS.
