Fire breaks out at Eden Gardens’ dressing room during renovation work before World Cup 2023
Fire broke out in the dressing room at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens late on Wednesday night. The incident happened during the renovation work before the World Cup 2023 to be held from October 5.
Those who were working there were the first to notice the fire. The fire department was immediately informed, after which they brought the situation under control with a short effort of two engines.
It is reported that the fire broke out in the false ceiling of the dressing room where the equipment of the cricketers were kept. Although the damage was not that great, all the belongings of the players there were burnt. Initially, it was believed that the fire was caused by a short circuit. The incident, meanwhile, brought the Eden Gardens’ infrastructure into question with less than two months left for the upcoming World Cup.
The cause of the sudden fire is being investigated. With the World Cup knocking on the door, the renovation work is going on vigorously. September 15 is the target to complete the renovation of the iconic venue. Meanwhile, the ICC representatives have expressed their satisfaction with the progress of the work and will come again next month for another inspection. However, the recent setback signalled new problems.
Fire-fighting was taken seriously in the reformation of Eden Gardens. A fire permit is mandatory for any match. The issue has also been kept in mind in organising the World Cup. The joint inspection team of the ICC and the board has also been informed about what measures should be taken if there is a fire here. An outline of the measures to be taken was also presented. A new cricketer’s dressing room is being built at Eden Gardens.
As soon as the fire was noticed, the working staff informed the fire department. Two fire engines arrived and brought the situation under control within an hour. It is believed that a lot of electrical equipment is being used in the renovation work.
The work had to be done through the arrangement of temporary connections. As per sources from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), there is no CCTV connection right now in the stadiums.
CAB cannot afford to have any more errors in management before the World Cup. Joint Secretary Debabrata Das rushed to the venue after the news of fire breaking out at the Eden Gardens came out. He said that an investigation will be done on the matter to check whether or not there was any negligence.
