FIFA Women’s World Cup Final: I have no plans to leave, says England coach Sarina Wiegman ahead of Spain clash

England women’s football team head coach Sarina Wiegman has confirmed that she has no plans to leave ahead of their FIFA Women’s World Cup Final against Spain at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney, Australia.

Speaking ahead of the final, Wiegman said she is really enjoying her job and has no plans to leave. Since arriving in England, Wiegman has won four trophies (Euro 2022, two Arnold Clark Cups and the Women’s Finalissima).

“I’m really enjoying my job. I have the impression that people still like me doing the job. I have no plans to leave. I’m staying out of [speculation regarding the USA job]. I’ve heard it. I’m with England, I’m really happy with England and I have a contract until 2025,” said Wiegman.

She went on to say that everyone is talking about England’s 1966 World Cup win ahead of their final against Spain. The England women’s team has reached their first World Cup final after defeating hosts Australia 3-1 in the semi-finals.

“I know it’s there. When we started working in September 2021, I felt that the country was so desperate to win a final in a tournament. To get the results, stop talking about the results because we know what we want. Everyone’s talking about 1966. So let’s be at our best on Sunday and try and be successful,” Wiegman added.

England started off their World Cup campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Haiti, before edging Norway 1-0 in their second match. In the final match of the group-stage, the Lionesses hammered China 6-1, with Lauren James running the show with a brilliant brace.

In the knockouts, England saw James pick a red card against Nigeria, which took the game to penalties, where they edged their African opponents 4-2. They then went on to beat Colombia 2-1 in the quarter-finals, before defeating Sam Kerr’s Australia 3-1 in the semi-finals.
