England still hopeful of Ben Stokes’s ODI comeback ahead of World Cup 2023: Matthew Mott

England’s white-ball coach, Matthew Mott, has disclosed that Jos Buttler, the limited-overs captain, will be the one to discuss the possibility of Ben Stokes reconsidering his retirement from ODI cricket. Although Stokes’ plans remain unclear, Mott remains hopeful about a potential reversal.

Stokes had announced his retirement from ODI cricket in July 2022, citing an overwhelming work schedule and a desire to focus on Test cricket. Nevertheless, Mott has expressed optimism that Stokes might change his decision before the 2023 ICC World Cup in India.

“Jos will probably lead the way on that communication, but Ben’s pretty straight with all of us. We will see if he’s keen. There has not been a clear direction on what he’s going to do yet, but we are still hopeful. I’ve always said his bowling would be a bonus, but just look at what he brings with the bat, even in the field,” Mott told Mail Sport.

Motts highlighted Stokes’ significant contributions to the team, particularly with the bat and in the field, and praised his strong presence throughout the Ashes series.

“Watching him throughout the whole Ashes series, he had such a great presence. He’s done it for years when it comes to performing in one-day cricket and so he’s an invaluable commodity,” Mott added.
