England spinner Adil Rashid hopes Ben Stokes will return for ODI World Cup

England spinner Adil Rashid hopes that Ben Stokes will come out of retirement to play the ODI World Cup 2023, set to begin from 5 October. Rumours have been rife in the British media that the England Test team captain, who announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket in July 2022, could return to play in the World Cup.

Stokes’ retirement announcement last year came as a shock to many. Citing an unsustainable work schedule and a desire to focus on the longest format of the game, Stokes stepped away from ODI cricket after playing just 105 games.

Adil Rashid, a key figure in England’s cricket team, has been vocal about his hopes for Stokes’ return.

“We’ve won two World Cups with Stokesy so we’re definitely a stronger team with him,” Rashid told The Daily Mail.

“Hopefully he comes out of retirement. That match-winning mentality, especially in those big World Cup moments like we’ve seen before is why he’s so good. Hopefully he’s fit enough and decides to change his mind,” he further added.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) requires teams to select a provisional World Cup squad by September 5 and to finalise their squads by September 28. This leaves room for late changes, and Stokes’ potential return could significantly bolster England’s lineup. The final squad will consist of 15 players, along with three travelling reserves.

Rashid also spoke highly of Jofra Archer, another player whose presence could greatly benefit the England team. Speaking at a Hundred event at his cricket centre in Bradford, Rashid said that it was worth the risk to fast-track Jofra Archer and make him a wild-card entry.

“Yeah, massively (worth the risk). He’s a world-class bowler who has that x-factor and has plenty of experience playing in India. Just like Stokesy, we’re a better team with Jof,” Rashid said.

Stokes’ potential return to ODI cricket and the World Cup stage would undoubtedly be a game-changer for England. His experience, skill, and match-winning mentality are assets that any team would value. As the cricket world awaits further news, the words of Adil Rashid echo the sentiments of many: “We’re a better team with Stokesy.”
