“We are doing a lot of work on technology bit. We have launched a chatbox under the birds and bees programme that catered to nearly four million kids in the northeast,” Ravi Bhatnagar from Reckitt.
Dr Ravi Kannan emphasises the use of technology to support doctors in remote areas like a Cloud ICU, through which focuses on bringing quality critical care within the reach of every patient, and Telepathology, which is a telecommunications technology used to facilitate the transfer of image-rich pathology data between distant locations for the purposes of diagnosis.
“We provided health education to local youth from the community who now serve as advisors and act as the bridge between us and the tribal community,” Dr Sadgeo on the importance of making healthcare accessible for the tribal society.
During the season 9 finale of Banega Swasth India, experts discuss the importance of traditional food and why it is essential to have local food over junk food.
“Tobacco, alcohol and poor dietary habits are causes of so many non-communicable disease. Only a healthy nation be productive and progressive. Keeping ourselves health is as patriotic a job as protecting the country in the borders,” Dr. Kannan.

The union health minister said that combating a disease like Sickle Cell requires timely, systematic and a focused effort, which India is making.
Dr Sagdeo was awarded Padma Shri in 2021 for improving the health status of tribals in Wayanad, Kerala. He has been treating Sickle Cell Anaemia in the region’s tribal population. Sickle Cell Anaemia is a genetic disease prevalent in the tribal belt of India. He said that Sickle Cell Disease must be registered as a notified disease in India.

The Central Government Has Launched National Health Infrastructure Mission: Dr Mansukh Mandaviya
Dr Mandaviya said that the centre has set an agenda to make India Tuberculosis-free by 2025. According to the minister, Jan Bhagidari or public participation can be seen in the Nikshay Mitra or Adopt a TB Patient’ program, wherein, the individuals can register themselves and adopt TB patients to take care of them.
Dr. Mandaviya said that the centre has focused on providing accessible and affordable health to the last mile. Hence, the government has established one Health and Wellness Centre for every 6,000-7,000 population.
Mr. Bhatnagar talked about one of Reckitt’s latest initiatives – the climate resilient school. The first of these schools was launched in Uttarakhand on world environment day, 2023. This school will focus on introducing climate-friendly technologies as part of the school infrastructure. The school infrastructure will be made in such a way that it will be energy and water-efficient.
Talking about the nine-year journey of Banega Swasth India, Mr Bhatnagar said that this health movement’s success lies in the shift towards hygiene practices. Mr Bhatnagar said, positive behaviour change is a key indicator of the campaign’s effectiveness. Emphasising the need for equity and an inclusive approach to health and hygiene, he said, India’s tribal population needs support for hygiene and healthcare and it is important to give last-mile access to healthcare services.
In Silchar, Dr Kannan says that despite providing ‘low cost and no cost’ treatment, boarding and lodging, people were still reluctant to get themselves treated as cancer treatment in India takes long that poses challenges for daily wagers.
“We have seen the reduction in neonatal mortality rates, and we must appreciate ourselves for that, but there are certain disparities we need to look at if we want to successfully work towards our aim of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” Dr Kler said.
“The Banega Swasth India campaign has done a lot in terms of changing the gut hygiene of people by educating them about washing hands and has also implemented several programmes to make sure the changes are made at the grassroot levels,” Dr Reddy added.
Dr. Chakravarty said that Reckitt’s programmes like the Diarrhoea Net Zero programme, the hygiene curriculum programme, the Birds and Bees programme, among others, have successfully impacted a large group of people and covered various health aspects.

Born and brought up in Chennai, Dr Seshiah is India’s first diabetic pathologist and is known as the Bhishma Pitamah of pregnancy diabetes in India. Dr Seshiah was honoured with Padma Shri 2022 for his contribution in the field of Medicine.
Dr Dhananjay Diwakar Sagdeo is a Haematologist and was bestowed with the Padma Shri award in 2021. He was the first to discover Sickle Cell Anaemia among the tribals of Wayanad, Kerala. He was quick to alert the government about the suspicion and later, from 1997-2001, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi along with Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission conducted a pilot project to screen people and manage the Sickle Cell Anaemia.
Dr. Praveen Chandra is a leading Cardiologist from Gurgaon. For his success and contribution in the field of healthcare and medicine, he was awarded with Padma Shri in 2016 by the President of India.
Dr. Nageshwar Reddy is recognised the world over for innovations in Gastrointestinal endoscopy and is the director of Chairman of Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG). He was conferred with Padma Shri in 2002 and Padma Bhushan in 2016.
Dr Neelam Kler, an eminent Neonatologist at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, is known for improving the chances of survival of premature babies weighing less than 1,000 grams. The Government of India conferred Dr. Kler with Padma Bhushan in 2014, for her the exemplary work in Neonatology.

Dr. Ravi Kannan, an oncologist, who quit his position as the Head of the Department of Surgical Oncology at the prestigious Cancer Institute (WIA) in Chennai, and shifted to Assam to treat the cancer patients of the Barak Valley in Silchar. In the last one decade, he has treated nearly 70,000 cancer patients. He won a Padma Shri in the year 2020.
