Another cross-border love: Sri Lankan woman weds man from Andhra Pradesh | Amaravati News – Times of India
As the news of the marriage went viral in social media on Saturday, the police directed that she leave the country before the expiry of her visa on August 15 or seek extension.
Coming close on the heels of Seema-Sachin and Anju-Nasrullah episodes of Indo-Pak cross border love and their subsequent wedding, the Chittoor incident has evoked keen interest among the locals.
After they decided to marry, Vigneswari came to Andhra Pradesh on July 8. The couple got married on July 20 at a temple at V Kota in Chittoor district.
Laxman, a mason from Arimakulapalle of V Kota mandal, met Vigneshwari of Sri Lanka on Facebook in 2017. Vigneshwari reached Chennai on July 8 from Colombo on a tourist visa. Lakshman went to Chennai to receive her. He later brought her home. With the consent of Laxman’s family members, they got married on July 20.
Vigneshwari planning to get Indian citizenship: SP
But the couple’s joy was shortlived as the Chittoor district police directed the couple to appear before them. Chittoor district superintendent of police (SP) Y Rishanth Reddy served a notice on Vigneshwari as her visa will expire on August 15.
The police directed that she must return to Sri Lanka by then.
But Vigneshwari refused to return to her country and requested the Indian government to make arrangements for her to stay in the country permanently so that she can live with her husband.
The SP told TOI that Vigneshwari is planning to get Indian citizenship and the procedure and criteria were also explained to her.
She applied for a year-long extension of her visa to stay back in India on Saturday.
“She is likely to get an extension on the grounds of marrying an Indian citizen”, the SP added.
The police said Vigneswari is a resident of Velangudi in Sri Lanka.
The police also advised the couple to get their marriage registered so that they can avoid any possible legal tangles in the future.
