17 deaths recorded in 24 hours at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Thane’s Kalwa | Thane News – Times of India

THANE: As many as 17 patients admitted to government-run Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial (CSMM) Hospital in Kalwa were reported dead within a span of 24 hours.

The incident comes close on the heels of public and political outcry after five patients died within one day on August 10.
Initial reports revealed that the majority of patients who died were admitted to the ICU, but an accurate number was yet to be confirmed by the CSMM hospital authorities.

Civic officials said they are analysing the cause of deaths at the facility. Many of the patients are elderly and were admitted in critical condition, it is learnt.
It may be noted that the hospital is the lone tertiary level hospital in the city and witnesses a huge rush of patients, especially from the suburbs and even neighbouring districts. The temporary shifting of Civil hospital due to its renovation has also led to many patients shifting, adding to the load here.
Former mayor and Shiv Sena leader Naresh Mhaske said he has communicated with the corporation to investigate the cause of the deaths.
A response from municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar was awaited.
